Desktop barcode printers are small in size and footprint and are usually the cost-effective barcode printers. Desktop barcode printers are also very ideal for a beginner in desktop barcode label printing. If the number of desktop barcode labels that you are going to print a month is not very high, a desktop barcode printer is also the way to go.

Desktop barcode printers have different features to pay attention to when choosing the correct one. These features include:

  • Desktop barcode label width: The width of the desktop barcode label that a desktop barcode printer is able to print on. Common desktop barcode label widths include 2 inches, 3 inches, 4 inches, 6 inches and 8 inches.
  • Desktop barcode label DPI: DPI means "Dots per Inch". The higher the DPI, the higher the quality of the desktop barcode label. Common desktop barcode label DPI include 203 dpi (printing text/desktop barcodes), 300 dpi (printing text/desktop barcodes and pictures), and 600 dpi (printing high quality text/desktop barcode and/or pictures .
  • Desktop barcode label printing technology: A desktop barcode printer will print in one of two ways. The first desktop barcode label printing technology is direct thermal desktop barcode label printing. With direct thermal desktop barcode printing, the desktop barcode printer will use heat from a print head to print directly onto media that has a special chemical on it. Direct thermal labels are meant to be for temporary applications, such as shipping labels. The direct thermal desktop barcode labels should not be exposed to high temperatures or direct sunlight, since the direct thermal desktop barcode labels will blacken. The second desktop barcode label printing technology is thermal transfer desktop barcode label printing. With thermal transfer desktop barcode label printing, a printhead applies heat to a ribbon which in turn melts the ink from the ribbon onto the label media. Thermal transfer labels are ideal for higher image quality and when labels need to last more than six months.

If at this point you are still in need of assistance, please don't hesitate to call or e-mail us with questions about a desktop barcode printer.
